Macintosh Telnet Clients work much the same as the above Windows clients do, the main difference would be the actual client software availble. Also you do not actually establish a Winsock connection, but TCP/IP networking does have to be set up (If you are surfing and seeing graphics you are set, so don't worry)
NCSA Telnet
Basically considered the best telnet client there is for the Mac.
